 Experience: Atmosphere

Hey Everyone! So from the email I sent everyone to summarize some things here:

Buses: VERY safe, air conditioned, curtains, cleaner than back home. The bus drivers have a law that they can't drive past a certain speed limit. About the same price, well maybe a little cheaper than back home.

Subway: It's interesting because you can pay for a card for an all day or all week subway or bus card. But what's ridiculous is that you pay for the actual CARD. So the card costs $10.00 and then you have to charge money on it, after you buy the card. Which I think is ridiculous!! I can't remember if it's air conditioned or not.. I haven't been on it enough to tell though.. What's cool about the subway which is about a 10 minute walk from my apartment is that you can go downstairs and it leads to underground and you can go across the street underground!! =) pretty cool! Subway is VERY clean and very safe.. not really much talking.. asians are quiet on public transportation I've noticed.

ahhhh food here.. I've heard and noticed actually Koreans eat alot of Garlic so apparently one of my asian friends told me that they can give off garlic fumes out of their pores...sooo... I haven't been eating a lot garlic actually ... I've been eating alot of tofu, salads, little oranges, soy milk, rice, banana chips.. nothing too much.. it's actually funny because up the street from me there is a KFC and a Pizza Hut.. HA! I'm still learning what koreans eat here.. I've heard they do eat dog or cat.. in GOd's Name NO!! I would or could never eat that.. The culture beyond the food is very interesting.. Still learning..

Living By:
I live by a thick stream or river.. not quite sure what it is exactly.. cuz it's pretty long..but it's really cool because it's literally 5 minutes walking distance and around the water there is both a bicycle and walking/running path!! =) perfect! I really want to join the YMCA here.. but I'm gonna wait til I get paid.. but there was alot of people biking, speed roll blading, and walking with their kids. It's really neat because I never felt so free in some ways.. I'm running and in one direction you can see the mountains and in the other you see more cultural korean style buildings/malls/restaurants.

My apartment:
My apartment has only 1 room and the bathroom.... Here the faucets you have to push down to turn on the water instead of the states where you have to pull up. The bathroom was definitely a culture SHOCK... they don't, well at least in my bathroom, they don't have separate showers. So when you walk in my bathroom, you see the toilet, faucet and that's it... So where do I shower you ask?? ahhh.. there is a hose WITHIN my bathroom.. so I have to shower within the bathroom.. so guess what happens?? EVERYTHING GETS WET!!! ugh! I'm gettting used to it.. but it's definitely been a transition and NOT what I'm used to back home.. kind of a pain.. but it's how life is.. at least my apartment.. old fashioned korean bathroom. I haven't seen really any other apartments to see if their all like mine or if it's just my apartment style or city..

Culture:
Korean women are afraid of the sun. So they'll walk around with umbrellas. Even just a little rain too I've notice koreans will take out their umbrella.. Just a little drizzle! oh geeze! I think it's sillly but oh well.. Their culture shocked by me... which shows me some lack of cultural world education.. they don't seem educated of people of different backgrounds and how there are different looks of people around the world. The church is big here and there's ALOT of buddhist temples here. I really want to learn Zen Meditation. It's good to release bad karma and bad stress!! I've heard it really clears the mind and all! =)

I can't think much else right now.. but the other day I went to the grocery store.. and what's funny here is that the koreans will be yelling in korean to advertise to sell the food! HAHA... I can't help but laugh.. because it's not what I'm used to.. I need to get a really good camera because I want to keep up my photography skills.. but I'm totally going to take a video of the grocery store.. I think it's soo funny... but I found a worker in the grocery store that speaks basic english.. so she was able to help me... THANK GOD! ! so that was a relief... But she was a very nice cute korean gal.. her name is Younie...

Gotta run.. but that's it for today.. but I'll be posting photos that I TOOK.. so you can see what I've seen! Love yall!

Hi! Are you still in Yongin? Which institute? Because I am also a postdoc in Yongin. As you know how boring is Yongin because hardly anyone speak English, it would be quite good for me if you are still here :)

    Reply to my e-mail... bye.

Goodluck. Hope you adopt well =) Also you could try the Korean Movie Industry, It's not much compared to Hollywood but If you're digging more about their culture you'll find a glimpse there.
