Woke up nice and early at 7am. Even though I hate waking up, I get used to it rather quickly. Struggled with some breakfast since I am not a morning person and what I thought was ketchup was actually guava spread. Pretty gross. We all piled on the bus again to embark on two different. We started on a bus tour. Our tour guide was a student from the University in the city and he was very informative about the history and location of the sights. We drove around and got a good sense of the city. We saw a really cool cemetary that was hundreds of years old. We also saw the 250 year old hospital. We learned that Ecuador has an informal economy with nultiple vendors selling a plethora of products. We saw alot of the poverty and crime appeared to be excessive as the majority of stores and homes were caged in. We drove by the worst neighborhoods in the city and it was very sad but informative. The houses are built close together and on top of each other to save space and money. I think it was more frustrating to hear the comments made by the other students on the trip. The ignorance and ethnocentric American views baffle me as to why they even cam on this trip. All they were worried about was where McDonalds was and have no concern for the people of the country. I do not think they tried to take advantage of learning the culture and language at all. After the bus tour, we went to the Parque Historico Guayaquil, which is an animal park with a historical background. It was alsolutely beautiful. We took a 3hour walking tour and saw various animals. The historical section of the park had hundred year old houses and have been preserved for their historical value. The view of the water was breathtaking. It was terribly hot and I could think of was what it must have been like without electricity of any kind. We drank some homemade lemonade and lunch was pretty tasty. The last leg of the tour was a botanical garden with numerous medicinal plants and fruits. We visited an indigenous tribe and their homes consturcted of bamboo. These 2 story homes could be made in seven days, quite impressive. I tried some naturally sweetened coffee which was delicious. The tour was overall really informative. Came back to the hotel afterwards to shower and relax and went out to eat with a bunch of us. I tried some new food: sausage stuffed in pig intestine. Different but good. Everything is so cheap here. People ate filet mignon for $9. After some great grub, we went to Club Fizz to interact with the people and party how they party. Good times! We'll just levae it at that.
