Dinner shows, professional surfers and kangaroos
Friday was our relaxed night out at Dracula's Cabaret Comedy Dinner Show. That gets it all in a nutshell. The building is right across the street from Pac Fair and we've heard a lot of good things about it. As soon as we cross the street, we noticed people dressed up handing out tickets and bracelets and directing traffic. There was a guy dressed up as the joker in the nurse outfit, two people in fishnets and red striped dresses and lots of makeup. The three of us apparently don't look eighteen so a guy came over and checked our IDs and gave us bracelets that said "Old enough to get sucked at Dracula's" Hell yeah! We got in line and waited our turn to enter the main room with the "Funeral Home" sign. A large group of people filed into the funeral home and waited for further instructions from our master guy. The walls were covered in creepy coffins that shook. Once he explained that we were going to the "other side" we exited through one of the coffins into the bar waiting area. Lindsey and I got cocktails and all three of us made our way to the "ghost train". We walked down stairs into a creepy basement with skeletons and other such things and hopped on a car that sent us to "Silent Hill". All of the cars were marked with different scary movies, it was pretty cool. We had a little ride through a haunted house and one guy popped out and yelled at us. We were ya know, only a LITTLE scared and worried about dropping out alcohol everywhere. We came out on the other side and found our table, which was a long red booth that faced all three stages. Our delicious entree was first (they call appetizers entrees) and we ate it while watching a scary movie projected onto the main stage area. Our waiter had a leatherface mask and spoke like Johnny Depp. It was cool. Some of the guys were so oddly dressed I couldn't help staring and apparently that made them uncomfortable. I just giggled. All the workers had a different character they had to portray. Once our main meal came (I got lamb, it was fantastic) the show officially started. It was mainly burlesque, old carnival type theme with scary and strange costumes. It reminded me so much of Big Fish- I love that movie. Carnival freaks and amazing singers. Our dessert was a cute little chocolate coffin with mint chocolate mousse. Nummy. We even got a picture with some of the freaks, and I look super happy to be electrocuted. Overall the night was impressive, weird and delectable.
Saturday morning we got up bright and early to find our way to Tweed Heads for the Quicksilver/Roxy Pro Tour surfing competition. Took us quite a while to find it- an hour and fifteen minute bus ride and we still had to walk along the beach. Once we saw the tents excitement rose. We grabbed food and headed over to the grass area overlooking the main beach. From there we watched Kelly Slater destroy the two other surfers in his heat and headed down to the beach. We found an awesome place right up front and had the perfect view. Guys were tearing the waves up, and the commentary allowed us to follow everything that was going on. The left side of my body is the darkest red I have ever seen, bra straps even kill my poor skin. The day ended with the weirdest tan patterns (i had squares from my bathing suit, strips on my face from my sunglasses, overall just funny). Lying around in the sun is exhausting, as lazy as that sounds. It had to have been at least 85. Yesterday was worse. Close to 95 without breeze. Ah! We are hoping to go back a couple more days to see them narrow down the heats and get into the semi finals and finals rounds. All the surfers are world famous, they are the Michael Jordan's of basketball, etc.etc. so being able to see it all was a privelege. Lindsey even got a picture with a surfer from California. Note: The surf was so intense that a few guys broke their boards right in half.
Yesterday was the best part of it all. The Australia Zoo- about 2 hours up to the Sunshine coast. Steve Irwin's zoo. He was everywhere. They had a memorial museum for him. His daughter was on everything too, dolls, tshirts, videos. It was very touching and an honor. How many people really get to go there? We took pictures by his original truck and saw a show with crocs and other reptiles. The zoo focuses on conservation so all the animals they had in captivity have the best homes, the most room and are spread out. They have about 10 crocs and they each have their own environment to live in. It's fantastic. Everything is kept pristine and every chance one of the workers gets they promote the environment. They have two Roo Heavens, large fields open for visitors and the kangaroos to do as they please. We can feed them and play with them. They were so calm and sleepy because of the intense heat. Much more docile than we had figured, initially Lindsey was even scared of the mommy with a joey in her pouch *CUTESTTHINGEVEROMG*. We finally got up the courage to pet them and talk to them. As if they responded. Haha. We also got to pet and take pictures with some koalas. Amazing. We want to go to the sanctuary so that we can hold them. I would freak out! Holding a koala! AHHH. The zoo was pretty much the best because of those two things. The Taronga Zoo had a lot more animals, but it wasn't as personal. We even fed elephants some bananas! Good thing I have self restraint because I probably would have attack hugged her trunk and who knows what would have happened then. Pictures are all over facebook.
Oh yeah, and today I bombed a Drugs test. Yay for me.
Maybe I'll write the paper I have due on Wednesday. Yeah.
