Last week our group took a fieldtrip to Totolapan for three days. It is a small town within the state of Morelos. I quickly learned that it was much different than Huehuecoyotl. We were able to see how people really live in Mexico. This definitely was not a tourist town; which made it even more amazing. There we stayed with different host families, the boys in one house and the girls in another. The families only spoke Spanish forcing us to practice ours. Lucky for me I had Melicia in the same house. She can speak Spanish very well, while mine is very poor. However while being in Totolapan my Spanish did improve greatly. I learned phrases that were necessary to get by.

During the trip we were able to see and do a lot of exciting things. One of my favorites would have to be visiting a middle school. We were able to attend an English class and interact with the students. They were all so excited that we were there. We played fun games that helped them practice their English while we practiced our Spanish. During their break we were able to join in on a soccer game with them. Even us girls played which is a big deal since only the boys play soccer. We were able to show the kids a good example. Maybe next time they play soccer the girls will start to join in.

Another part of the trip I enjoyed was distributing milk to families in need. Between eight and nine in the morning, families would come to receive milk. They could take up to two big bags of milk every six days for a small fee. They would receive more milk for every child they had. It really was a nice system. I loved how every family was so pleasant. I also loved how they were not ashamed that they needed the help. I was very glad that I could take part in this.

The people in the town were great. I felt very welcome and comfortable there. Even though most of the people did not have a lot of money, they were very thankful for what they did have. They seemed to be happy and satisfied with their lives. I wish that we all could see life in that way. I also am glad that they shared their homes with us.
