Is this normal?
Saturday in Jerusalem. Kickball game with Hebrew Union College students, family, a professor, one religious man and his three kids, and one Israeli fan turned kickball guardian for the girl’s side.
Standing in the outfield, day dreaming about making a fantastic catch, three boys catch my eye. They play with a plastic toy gun: unfortunately normal behavior for kids all over the world. I dismiss the scene.
I’m standing in line, waiting for my turn to kick the ball out of the park. Three boys catch my eye. They play with a plastic toy gun. One is standing in submission as another boy pretends to shoot him in the head. Is this normal?
The boy about to be shot is rescued by the third youngster. All three pull out their guns and turn to the outfield players of our game-the boys. Future rabbis, cantors, husbands of rabbis, husbands of cantors. They begin running around, shooting at some of the students, far enough away that they too are fantasizing about catching the kickball but will most likely not see any action. Is this normal?
The professor says they are from East Jerusalem. It is part of their culture.
