Summer down under

This journal will be talking about my experiences before and during our class excursion to Crystal Waters in AU. Hopefully anyone will be able to look through these and get a good laugh as well as learning something.

 Sustainability

So I'm not sure if this is where I'm meant to put this, but really I can't quite figure out this blog thing, and I figure if I get it up here at least I can say I've done it and then move it to the correct location when I do manage to figure it out.

Sustainability to me means being able to support one's self without the need for manufactured things.  To be able to provide what one needs for a healthy, happy life.  What excites me about sustainability is the thought that even if everyone in the world just makes small changes, we have the ability to change the world.  As a movement it excites me because it means that we have a chance to save our world for our great great grandchildren to see.  Polar Bears in the north, Rainforests in the south and thousands of beautiful and amazing sights that newer generations may never get to see if we don't reduce our carbon footprint. I think one of the most amusing things that one can find in regards to the different definitions of sustainability are how each one differs from culture to culture.  Take americans for example; granted while we're getting better at it, our version of sustainability seemed to be buying things that are cheaply produced in bulk and then having them on our shelves until we need them.  Granted this is changing, people are now having small gardens in their backyards which are providing the vegi's (and some of the fruits) that they need to survive.  However if you look at another country, you will find that a backyard garden is nothing new, and that these families may also be raising small livestock.  Sad to say I'm not really practicing sustainability in my everyday life.  I do try to grow a few plants for my family, (last year I had some plants only to have the people that do the lawn pull them up).  We also recycle as a family and have changed out our lightbulbs to the longer lasting version.  (And HOPEFULLY I've managed to convince my dad to look into getting solar pannels for the roof so that some of our energy can be provided by that).  What I hope to learn from Crystal Waters is better ways of doing everything.  I am so looking forward to learning the right times to plant, what goes best next to what.  Designs for everything and anything else I can possibly learn.  I wanna learn so much my brain will be oozing out my ears XD   Gods know I'll try and help with anything I can in terms of teaching others in regards to sustainability and who knows maybe I'll have a few tricks, like turning one thing into another to prevent needless buying.
