What was your most challenging travel experience?

Having to spend the first 24 hours of a much needed vacation to St. Kitts in San Juan, Puerto Rico waiting for the ash from the erupting volcano on Montserrat to settle. I'm glad we got there the last day-there were travelers backed up for 5 days!

MY COSTA RICAN IMMERSION

I AM DOING AN IMMERSION PROGRAM IN SAN JOSÉ, COSTA RICA TO IMPROVE MY SPANISH SO I WON'T NEED AN INTERPRETER TO COMMUNICATE WITH MY NON-ENGLISH SPEAKING HISPANIC PATIENTS. I ALSO WANT TO EXPERIENCE AND APPRECIATE THEIR CULTURE TO THE FULLEST!

My first week went better than I expected!

Well, I've completed the first week of my 8 week Immersion Program and things are going very well. My professors have told me that my grasp of Spanish grammar is much better than the students they normally have that have had more semesters of Spanish than me. It really hasn't been too bad speaking Spanish all the time once you get used to constantly being corrected. My host family is great! My "Mom" and I are about the same age and my "siblings" are in their early 20's and are hardly ever home so I think that she is really enjoying the company. In my first week, besides school I toured San Jose, the capitol of Costa Rica, learned how to make empanadas, toured The University of Costa Rica including the Insect Museum, visited a small street produce market, learned a lot of new fruits and vegetables while buying produce with "Mom" and did a practice trip by myself into San Jose by bus to see if I remembered where important "points of reference" are because they don't use street names here for the most part. Hope everything is well with all my family and friends. ¡Pura Vida! Mary
