• What does the term ecovillage mean to you?The term ecovillage, to me, is very much like the term culture: definitions vary and there is no one agreed upon usage. I do, however, find that Robert Gilman's definition falls slightly short. I am more inclined to say that an ecovillage is a geographically delineated physical space combined with a more widespread imagined community network of those actively involved in the ecovillage, which together work toward a collective, sustainable, naturally integrated and constantly developing lifestyle. This means than an ecovillage does not have to be perfect, it does not have to perform each of its functions and processes at the most highly developed level. What distinguishes an ecovillage from the rest of the world's villages (cities, towns, states, nations) is the conscious and collective effort to live more harmoniously with our environment. • Can an ecovillage ever be truly manifested or will it always be in process? Explain. An ecovillage is only ever truly manifested if it is continually in process. That seems like a ridiculous answer, however, knowledge and cultures are constantly changing and adapting, which forces their institutions and cultural objects to morph in response. If we lived in a static world, there would be not in process truly manifested ecovillages; but we do not live in such a world. I think, this is for the better.
