Well this year I was fortunate to receive spring break early. I had two weeks off from school and I took that opportunity to travel around and see what else Australia had to offer. My first destination was the city of Melbourne. I arrived in Melbourne at the smallest airport I've ever seen. The airport consisted of one gate and it was the first time that I walked out of the rear or an airplane and along the runway. I thought that it was pretty cool, I kind of felt like a rock star getting out my private jet. The airport was even smaller than my regional airport back home but the place was packed. When I got to the city instantly, I felt like I was back home in Boston, until I asked for directions and the Australian accent brought me back to where I was. At first glance, it was Saturday night and the city was not booming like Sydney. There were a few people walking around but it wasn't the crazy hustle, bustle like I have become accustomed to in Sydney. Also the city looked older with old historic brick buildings everywhere, kind of like bean town. Well when I was a little nervous when I started the trip because this was the first time I had planned my own trip completely by myself without parental help. I was a little nervous because I wasn't really sure how I would get around and where I needed to be but that was quickly gone when I realized that this was Australia and I'm sure that anyone would help me out if need be. Well I arrived at the hostel and I didn't know what to expect, it was my first time staying at one, but for $13 per night, I wasn't in any mood to complain. The "All Nation's Backpacker's Hostel" was a really big old building. The staff was extremely helpful and helped me plan my whole stay in Melbourne. My room was an eight person dorm and when I walked in, I heard the familiar sound of Portuguese being spoken. My dorm mates were all Brazilians who had decided to visit Australia and backpack all around it. After I unloaded my stuff I went for a walk just to check out the city. It was definitely much smaller than Sydney, and again a lot like Boston's size. The next day I went to watch The Phantom of the Opera at the Princess Theatre. The theatre was gorgeous, it wasn't as big as I had expected but beautiful nonetheless. The detail of the interior was fantastic and the show itself was amazing. This was my first time seeing it and I enjoyed it much more than I had expected. The next day we went visited the aquarium and it was really just like any other aquarium I had been to. After that, we went to the Australian Pixar headquarters, which was pretty nice. They showed all sorts of sketches and storyboards, things of that nature. They also showed how the movies were created and put together and I enjoyed it overall. Our last day we visited the zoo and it was nice I got my first experience with koalas and kangaroos. At the end of the day I boarded a plane and headed for my next location, Adelaide.
