A Media Intern's Escapades

I will document my experiences as a media intern; chasing down stories, getting interviews and following other volunteers on various projects around Belize.

My life in comparison seems superficial; shallow. Before I came here I was content in my fancy apartment, my car, big college and flashy clothes.

I found myself sitting under a post today, looking for shade and wondering what difference I could possibly make for the people of Bradley Bank's? All I can do is listen to thier story's and take it all in...

It is the children here that affect me the most; thier genuine curiousity, kindness and innocence. Robina... she walked a few circles around me, barefoot and with her hair braided. I asked where I could find a Coca Cola. I was charmed by her as we shared a walk to the Chinese store. She was buying cigarettes for her pa, and I bought us sodas.

The village I visited today has been without electricity and water for 6 years. Somethings have moved forward with newly elected town council members. Two months ago they got running water. I spent the day with two families. Pure kindness...One family gave me a glass of cold lime juice. It had ice! I wanted to cry for some reason. A simple gesture meant more to me in the world. You may think I am a crazy, but I know what they went through to get that ice. I  have no idea where they kept it because they do not own a refrigerator. The house was bright pink inside and out and one girl sat in the chair while her mother braided her hair. For many kids in Cayo, today is high school graduation. Quiet possibly one of the biggest moments in thier life. Some will go to college to get an associates degree, and some will not.

I find myself wondering how anyone can visit parts of the world like North Belize and not leave a changed person. My life in comparison seems superficial, so shallow. Before I came here I was content in my fancy A/C apartment, my car, big college and flashy clothes. Boy have I gotten a wake up call! I am experiencing one of those rare moments in life where you get exactly what you didnt even know you needed. You can not understand Belize till you come here; see it, smell it, feel it, live it. Its a beautiful country with so much to offer individuals seeking experience, culture, and a new perspective. You will leave here a changed person. There is no way to prepare yourself for what you will see, the things that will impact you and the parts of yourself you will discover or rediscover.
