 Day 9-10

So I have been to the supermarket 5 times in the past 10 days. Like everyone else in Chile, I guess you just buy for the next few days as opposed to the next few weeks, like I am accustom to doing in the states. Plus, living in a house with 5 people, the fridge space is pretty tight, along with kitchen space for that fact. It has been pretty challenging to get down and dirty in the kitchen without all the proper utensils or work space. And whether or not the oven actually works is still up in the air…right now it is the only available storage for the pots and pans. I guess these are all reasons why meals have consisted of grab and go carbs or often it is easier to eat out. Speaking of, Monday night, Mara, Daniel, Peter and I were really craving some meat since we have been here, and not a hot dog complete topped with mayo and avocado (palta) but I nice steak. There are tons of Argentine ‘parilladas’ (grills) here so we decided to check one out, without looking at the menu unfortunately. So when it was all said and done, we walked out with full tummies at 1am having enjoyed a quaint $80.00 steak dinner. There’s nothing like going to bed on a stomach full of meat and bread…(maybe I wont be losing that much weight afterall) We justified it as a group, pre-valentines date, or a celebration of our first week here; but I tell ya, it was well worth it.

So week 2 continues with our days not really starting until 1:30 in the afternoon when we leave for class. We spend most classes learning cultural and historical facts, chilenismos (a totally new vocabulary that pretty much all Chileans use. I am slowly starting to understand people here) and having debates about controversial issues like abortion, divorce, pornography, politics etc. That really stresses the ol noggin, trying to dig around for vocab words that you had to use for one week in college Spanish class. Then we all head back home after class ends at 5:30 for more down time, errands, studying, afternoon beach time, then dinner and nightly fun. So I guess life isn’t that rough here.

Last night Mara and I actually put our kitchen to use. We made some awesome beef stir fry with her grandma’s teriyaki/soy sauce recipe. Everyone in the house was jealous and we were full.

Today’s Wednesday and I am about to head out for hump day at school (just the mid week hump, not any chancy, extra-curricular activity day or anything)  Then later tonight we all are going to continue the mid week celebration and check out a new café/bar/discoteque in the south of Vina called Café Journal.

Hasta Pronto!
