I was trying to catch the metro in Rome and went down some escalators to where I could hear the train arriving. When I looked around, I couldn't see anywhere I could buy a ticket! I turned back to go up the exit escalators, only to find that they were out of order! I panicked and decided I could sprint up the 'up' escalators.... I got within 4 feet of the top and couldn't go any further. Some very nice, very confused Italian guys asked me what I was doing, exactly. When I told them I needed a ticket, they guided me back down the escalators to an automated machine I'd somehow missed....
