 Party Time!

The island of Leyte in the Philippines has been a thriving party now for a month, celebrating a rich pre-Spanish cultural heritage.  The Pintados festival is most noted, however, for the full-body paint worn by the participants.  Dancers, actors, and street performers are decked out from head to toe in paint designed to mimic the ancient tattoo art and armor of Philippine warriors.

In 1668, when the Spaniards first arrived on the island of Leyte, they referred to the inhabitants as "pintados" due to their rich body art.  The tattoos served as a status symbol in Leyte, similar to a General's badge.  They were marks of strength, courage, and wisdom, among men and women.  So in 1987, when citizens of Tacloban City were looking for a way to celebrate the festival of Senor Santo Nino, a celebration of that heritage seemed the ideal way to both bring in visitors to the city, and honor the people's ancestors.
