 The 8th Wonder???

The Central American country of Nicaragua submitted a bid for the 8th Wonder of the World with the incomparable Isla de Ometepe in the Lago de Nicaragua.  The island constitutes the largest lake island in the world and is composed of two volcanos rising over the 'Sweet Sea'.  It seems remarkably unpolluted and pure, especially in comparison with the throbbing metropolis of Managua.  It lacks most major infrastructure and is not necessarily set up to receive large numbers of tourists.  This makes it the ideal spot for the backpacker trying to get away from the "beaten path".  Sitting within the folds of the mountains are organic farms which provide food to the island, and unfortunately for the farmers, to many of the howler monkeys and parrots that make the island their home.  A nice 10 - 12 hour hike up the loose gravel sides Volcan Concepcion leads to a spectacular view of the lake and surrounding countryside, if you should happen to arrive on one of the vary rare days when the top isn't surrounded in a cloud, either due to the weather or the constant flow of steam emerging from the volcanic peak.  While the island unfortunately did not receive the position of 8th Wonder, this has prevented it from descending into the touristic morasse that so many gorgeous locations around the world have found themselves.
