As usual our day started early. At breakfast it was announced that we'd be going to "Hogar Ines Chambers." This is a co-ed orphanage that accepts children abandoned by their parents and raises the children until the age of 18. When we arrived at this site, the children were gone at a day camp. For the first hour I pulled weeds with one of my roommates. It was a calming job; although I felt like I wasn't getting anywhere (I had never before pulled weeds in my life). I had to collect some of the trash that had made its way to the weed-ridden area in front of the gym being constructed. The premises seemed a little bare without the children and I couldn't wait to see them come back from the camp. Before lunch I made my way across the court yard where all the boys were playing basketball in order to help out with organizing the library. Tiffany came up with a great way to organize all the books and we helped her categorize them. Right as we were finishing, the kids came back and were eager to get their hands on some of the books. We weren't successful in trying to explain that we had to categorize the books first, so we gave up and let them take some books as we were shifting through the piles. The afternoon went by fast. For dinner we ended up at "Hotel Continental." We didn't see the menu until after we were seated, so by then it would have been rude to get up and leave. Otherwise I would have opted for McDonalds again. Everything seemed to include meats that I wasn't accustom to eating and vegetables that I had never heard of. I ended up ordering a "Hamburguesa con queso", or cheeseburger. It tasted great and the meat wasn't salty, which made me think that there was something wrong with that McDonald's meat. I paid around five dollars for my meal. Not bad for a nice restaurant.
That night we all headed for the IMAX theatre at the Malacon. It was quite modern and impressive. Floor to ceiling windows wrapped around the circular building and the food center filled the air with the smell of popcorn. There was nothing third world or peripheral about this place. The film we saw was on sharks, so even if it was in English, I don't think I would be interested.
