Everything was closed except for the Casinos, so why notβ¦
I am going to start off by saying that Prague is my FAVORITE CITY IN THE WORLD! We only had 2 nights and one day there so we needed to move fast. Our driver drops us off at our hotel, which was really nice, the staff was really helpful and the breakfast was so good! So we check into our room and what do you know, the Godfather was on the tv in Czech! Ironic and hilarious, haha! So we put down our things and go to the front desk to find out where we can get something to eat at this time of night. He tells us to walk around the corner and there is McDonalds and KFC and everyone most likely speaks English. I like the occasional KFC twister wrap with French fries but at this point in studying abroad and being away from American things, I was LOVING KFC around the corner. Go figure, our meals were 50 crowns! (crowns is Czech money… I’ll be referring to them a lot so remember it) 50 crowns is about 2 euro. You can obviously already start to understand why I love the city Prague so much. Everything is dirt cheap. More for your buck! So we eat and head over to Wenceslas Square which is one of the most famous things to do in Prague. Everything was closed except for the Casinos, so why not… we decide to go in. I sit down at the slot machine and I put 100 crowns in, everything is in Czech so I don’t know how to play I’m kind of just hitting buttons and pulling levers. Next thing I know I’m down to 0. so I put another 100 in and as tino walks away to a poker table the lights start flashing and sirens and I have no idea what’s going on and apparently I was winning! So I was up to about 180 crowns and I cashed out. So I play a different one, same story… play 100 lose it, play another and win so I finally cash out and we leave and I’m 200 crowns richer. We head back to the hotel and wake up bright and early… 6 am to be exact. We get our map from the desk and he explains to us where everything is and how to get there. So we walk around the corner and get on the tram to head to the castle. We have no idea where to get off because the stops are all in Czech and the map is in English and the words don’t even remotely look alike. The word for bus stop might be something like qwbevxcrbcvlkoiuk. Dead serious… so luckily we find tourists and tell us to get off with them because they are going too. We get off and head through the gates and the guards with machine guns to the ticket office to buy our tickets. We had to also purchase a picture license to be able to take pictures while we were inside. The first stop of the castle was the St. Vitus Cathedral. When I said St. Mark’s cathedral in Venice was gorgeous, then you haven’t lived until you’ve been to Prague and seen St. Vitus Cathedral. We walked around inside in awe and amazement as pure gold tabernacles and crosses hung for the ceilings and paintings and intricate carvings on the walls and columns. Words cannot do this cathedral justice, so look out for the pictures. We then headed to the museum in the basement of the castle where all the old books and furniture and remnants of the royal families were. Their tapestries, clothing, jewelry, bones, kitchen wear, books, weapons etc. I hate museums but I didn’t manage to find some things interesting. I look to look at things but I don’t like to read about them. So if you asked me who they belonged to or what was significant I couldn’t tell you, but at least I was there and saw it. So after walking around and tons of pictures and messing with the guards at their posts we decided to find a restaurant that we wanted to go to that I found online. So we find it on the map and get on the tram and head in that direction. Once again the map is in English and the stops are in Czech so we just get off and start wandering around. We end up finding a restaurant after giving up that was really nice. It turned out that it was in a perfect location because after dinner we walked outside and looked to the right and there was Charles Bridge! So it worked out perfect. We sit down and they hand us a menu and I decide to order rabbit with potatoes and carrots and string beans and hunters soup. I never ate any of this stuff in my life but we made a promise that we would only eat the traditional food. I was surprised at how good the soup was! It was a beef broth with carrots and dumplings and onions and little meatballs. The meatballs were a compilation of rabbit, boar and duck. So I gave them to tino, haha! Everything else was good! My rabbit came and tino ordered chicken soup with roast duck and dumplings and everything was fabulous! I OFFICIALLY LOVE CZECK FOOD! Lunch was so good and when we were finished we walked over to Charles Bridge (another famous landmark). All kinds of vendors and painters and artists were on the bridge and it was really cool. We get to the end and we decide we want to climb to the top. Or should I say, I decide we should climb to the top being that tino is afraid of heights. So we climb to the top and tino wont step foot out of the door so I walk around and take pictures and make fun of him and it was a fun time. I could see the entire city of Prague. After, we made our way to “old town” which is where everything is. It was so much fun, there were vendors, iron smiths, medieval castles, churches, buildings and restaurants and tons of people! We weren’t even hungry but we found a little vendor selling kabobs. Just because we were only there for a day, we thought we might as well try everything they had to offer because it was “the real Prague experience”. HAHA! So we bought a kabob and it was chicken and pork… best meat I have ever eaten. It was so juicy and tender and Czech it was great. After hanging around we saw another vendor selling a “trdlnek” no idea how to pronounce it but it was by far the coolest, most delicious thing ever! It was spun on a rotisserie over an open flame and it was dough and once it was brown they would take it off and roll it in vanilla, sugar and walnuts. SOOOOOO GOOOODDDD!!! So we enjoyed our “trdlnek” and asked them how to pronounce it, I couldn’t even begin to try so they laughed at us and we laughed and gave up and walked around for more delicious Czech food to eat, we were really stuffed and we were about to go on our dinner cruise in a few hours so we just walked around. We saw the signs clock and inside the clock that told the time, was a clock for Aquarius, Pisces, Aries, etc. we were there during the Pisces time since it was February. We saw some more churches that were really gorgeous, shopped some more and then made our way back to our hotel to get ready for the dinner cruise and city by night tour. Before we did that, you must know were lost in the city of Prague for about an hour because we were walking in circles trying to find the right direction to go in! We kept asking people but had no luck because we asked tourists and they were lost too. Im sure an areal view of all the tourists in Prague walking around in circles must be hilarious. We passed the same people about 4 times. Hilarious! Anyway, we finally make it back to our hotel after passing through Wenceslas square and picking out cool looking casinos to go in later that night. We’re ready to go on the tour and cruise so we are waiting outside our hotel for our driver and he picks us up and there are only 2 other people on the tour.. but it was still very nice. We took a tour of the city at night time on the bus and saw all the things we saw earlier that day including the oldest Spanish synagogue in Europe, and the National Theatre. They drove us to the river to board the boat where we were going to have dinner and a tour of the city by the river. We get on the boat and there are tons of people and a cute string band playing traditional Czech music and a hot and cold buffet of traditional Czech music and they welcome us with a shot of akjshdfluiehk. I’m not even going to try to spell the name of the liquor, but it’s Czech so that explains it. Me and tino weren’t accustomed to the way Europeans do shots. Apparently you sip them…. so we basically downed a shot glass of pure ethanol in one shot. HORRIBLE… I thought I was going to throw up and tino looked like he was going to die! We then had to explain to our tour guide why we were so sick and she found it amusing that Americans drink shots and one and don’t sip them. I’ll never do a shot ever again in Europe. Haha! Dinner was ready and it being a buffet and us wanting to try all the Czech food possible we grabbed everything and surprisingly everything was delicious. I love Czech food! We had goulash, some sort of rice with rabbit and pork and vegetables and they had French fries and all kinds of stuff. It was really nice. After dinner we decided to go out onto the deck because we wanted to see the rest of the city. From the river, we got to see everything we saw earlier in the day but also we saw some new things. We saw the Boatel, which was a boat, but a hotel, and we saw a cemetery where all the Czech composers and artists and royalty were buried. The dinner cruise was awesome and I am so glad I’m smart and booked something like that because it was well worth it. I recommend it to everyone if you happen to travel to Prague. When the cruise was over the dropped us off at Wenceslas Square and it was GAMBLING TIME! We go in one casino, and I was a little tired at the slots, so I go to the roulette table… GOOD CHOICE! 100 crowns on 27, next thing I know, sirens and lights are going off and people are looking and tino is in shock because he is losing every crown he has and I just keep winning and I don’t even know how to play! So I cash out and I get 1000 crowns. So I put another 100 down on 27, doesn’t come out, I change it up a bit and after losing 500, I finally win so I’m back up to 1000 crowns, so we cash out and head to another casino.. Same thing, 100 crowns on 27 and tino is losing his money and next thing I know the ball lands in the 27 slot!! 2000 crowns for me and I called it a night. So we walked around some more and by 1am we were back in the hotel packing our things to get ready for the next morning. We had our last breakfast at our hotel and it was awesome! The first time I had eggs and meat for breakfast in 5 months! People in Italy eat croissants and coffee... YUCK! Kill me now, I want my pancakes and sausage links with fried bologna and potatoes and eggs and toast and tea. =] So we wake up at about 6, had our breakfast and our driver picked us up and took us back to the airport so we could head to DUBLIN, IRELAND!!!! So we get to our gate and I exchange what is left of my 2000 Crowns after buying last minute things that I wanted to blow my money on, I exchanged 500 crowns, and went to Ireland with 60 euro that I didn’t have before. I.LOVE.GAMBLING. end of story.
