What to do in Porlamar.
Normally at nights after work, I invite my Spanish students to drink some beers; there are interesting and quiet places of course there are also active places. Some of the quiet places are Utopia a very nice and comfortable Cyber Café; discotheques like Señor Frog’s, Kamy Beach, and Nikki Beach are very popular mostly in high season. I use this place to help my students to get into our Venezuelan culture.
Restaurants
If you want to eat in Porlamar, there are a variety of places to do it; all depends on what you’d like to eat, for example if you want to eat meat I recommend you to go to Sambil a big mall where you can find Buffalo which specialties are meats. Here you can eat excellent meats. If you like the pizza you can find good restaurants, among them there is a nice one which name is Il Positano. Logically you realize that it is an Italian restaurant where you can eat very delicious pizzas. Are you looking for McDonalds or maybe for Wendy? Do not worry “Mi amigo” we have them here.
Events
The most spectacular session of all the year is the Holy Week (la Semana Santa). All the people from Venezuela come to the island to party. All the hotels, apartments and places to sleep are totally full. If you visit beaches like Parguito and playa el Agua, el Yaque you won’t be able to walk, there are young people everywhere looking for fun.
Services
You don’t have to worry about services we have had students who didn’t have any problem to find vehicles, make trips, visit historical places, they get a lot fun in our discotheques and they meet new people.
Excursions and Museums
In Porlamar there are some museums, the museum Francisco Narvaez is one of the principal places to visit. There is always something nice to see.
You could also visit the Museo Marino, the only detail is that this place is very far away from Porlamar this place is in La Peninsula de Macanao in the other side of the insland, but anyway I would recommend you to visit it. Porlamar is known as the mainly commercial city on the island. From there you can go to some travel agencies and plan your next trip.
Customs, Typical Products
It's usual here to eat empanadas and arepas. Typical Venezuelan food that you should try. Friday evening after work everybody goes to drink beer. You have to eat a Pinchos they taste really nice. And don’t forget to move around the main cities by public buses, they’re very slow but really funny and nice.
