Viva la Argentina

For the next 2 months, I will be spending my time in Argentina dining with local Argentinians, exploring the foreign streets that aren´t quite what I would call familiar, and seeing the world under different lights. I will begin in Cordoba, travel South to Mendoza, drop even further South to Bariloche, make my way back up to Buenos Aires, and then complete the circle in Cordoba. Deseenme suerte!

After receiving my drink, I was again reminded that I was in a foreign country when I learned that ¨Fernet¨ wasn´t a type of fruit mixer.

This past weekend was my first experience with the Argentinean nightlife, and an experience it was. We may have trendy bars and know how to throw a house party in the states, but Argentineans know how to throw an after party. I´m lucky my parents aren´t here, because my curfew would have ended before the night even began!

After spending the week getting to know the various international students, we quickly clung together because we all shared one important thing in common: none of us departed from home knowing anyone. We were lucky to embark on the night with a local we met through the school, other we probably would not have had such an eventful night.

We began at a bar around 11:30, but I didn´t quite understand why it was empty at a relatively early (on an American watch, that is) hour. David, the local, laughed as he reminded me that the night doesn´t even begin in Argentina until after 12:00. After being reminded of what a child I was for going to bed so early back home, I decided to order a drink to help wake me up. After receiving my drink, I was again reminded that I was in a foreign country when I learned that ¨Fernet¨ wasn´t a type of fruit mixer. It´s quite pungent taste of alcohol, but an experience nevertheless! Aparently I will get used to it.

After the bar, my compañeros and I went to a local Reggae concert that was just like the movies. It was very cool, and the music was awesome. Altogether the night was a success, but the next morning wasn´t quite as productive!
