Study a language abroad and experience the local culture. The best way to learn a language is to travel to where it is spoken, live with the locals and become part of them. Share your experiences or get advice from the experts who have traveled abroad.

Viva la Argentina

For the next 2 months, I will be spending my time in Argentina dining with local Argentinians, exploring the foreign streets that aren´t quite what I would call familiar, and seeing the world under different lights. I will begin in Cordoba, travel South to Mendoza, drop even further South to Bariloche, make my way back up to Buenos Aires, and then complete the circle in Cordoba. Deseenme suerte!

I´m still not quite a local

At first glance, the school has been somewhat intimidating considering it is all in Español!

Upon arriving to Argentina, I was somewhat hesitant about Cordoba when the first thing I saw were clouds and no Starbucks. However, I was quickly reminded that I was in a culture of hospitality and kindness when I was greeted two days ago by my host family, or who I refer to as my pseudo-mother for the time being. Valeria is both hospitable and welcoming, and has offered me a fantastic place to call home. Her house, along with most of the houses in Cordoba, isn´t what I know as spacious, but it´s cozy and has been easy to adjust to.

The kindness of the culture that I initially received from my home stay mother has not stopped there. Yesterday was my first day of attending classes here with COINED. I forgot to mention before that my main objectives here are to study the Spanish language, and work as an interning journalist for COINED. Anyway, the teachers are very friendly, but they refuse to speak in English. You can imagine how quickly I have had to become attentive to every word that sounds familiar, and pretend to understand the rest. However, between volunteer work in Mexico and an exchange program in Spain, I have learned that the language will click after a few days. At least I hope!

At first glance, the school has been somewhat intimidating considering it is all in Español! However, I have gotten by just fine and already I have learned a lot of Spanish. I wouldn´t say that I have quite ¨gotten the hang of things¨ but as far as I know, an average day will consist of waking up, going to school from 9:00 to 1:00, eat lunch, go to work from 2:30 to 8:00, then come home. We´ll see what the weekends have to offer…
