Since its abundant historical tourist resources, Wuzhen was awarded to be the Provincial Ancient Town of History and Culture in 1991, raking first among the six ancient towns south of the Yangtze River.

Wuzhen is one the six famous ancient towns in the north of the Yangtze River,  in addition to Zhou Village, Tongli, Jiaozhi town, Nanxun and Xitang. Since its abundant historical tourist resources, Wuzhen was awarded to be the Provincial Ancient Town of History and Culture in 1991, raking first among the six ancient towns south of the Yangtze River. Its architecture is in Ming and Qing style and its ancient towns are well-preserved. Endowed with typical water town characteristics and profound Chinese culture, Wuzhen is a hot destination for tourists from home and abroad.

Located in Zhejiang Province, in north end of Tongxiang, Wuzhen is a water town with more than 2000 years history, which was served as boundary between The Wu and Yue kingdom. Wuzhen displays its water town style and features in elegant bridges, flowing waters and unique architecture. The waterside houses, exquisite engraved windows and the simple lifestyle of local people all reflect antique atmosphere. Shaped as” a crisscross”, four ancient streets in the east, west, south and north constitute the layout of the town. People there are living a simple life. Many of them breed silkworms and raise chrysanthemums. And they keep a unique tradition of buying fruits and vegetables from boats through windows of their waterside houses. This town divided into six districts: Traditional Workshops District, Traditional Local-Styled Dwelling Houses District, Traditional Culture District, Traditional Food and Beverage District, Traditional Shops and Stores District, and Water Township Customs and Life District. Strolling all the districts, you can fell each of its features and every district boasts its tradition and profound Chinese culture.

The bridge is the indispensable ingredient of the water town of south of the Yangtze River. It is said that Wuzhen once possessed more than 120 bridges. Experiencing ups and downs in history, there are only 30 bridges retained now. With different elegant designs and exquisite engraving skills, these bridges boast the charm of the water town. “Bridge within a Bridge” is typical one of them, which is comprised by Tongji Bridge and Renji Bridge with the former crossing the river from east to west and the latter running from south to north. One will be amazed at its extraordinary design with either of two bridges can be seen through the arch of the other.

Being one of the Key State Preserved Relic Units, the Former Residence of Mao Dun is well worthy to pay a visit. Mao Dun is a prominent writer and made a great contribution to Chinese Literature. His works Lin Family’s Shop and Xiangshi vividly described the real life of the people of Wuzhen.
