Hey All!
So I am LOVING Copenhagen. It is such a gorgeous city. And no matter how much I love NYC, I might like Copenhagen a bit better just because it has no skyscrapers. As mom and dad know, I was really nervous at the airport, but while waiting for my plane, I saw that most of the other people waiting were for DIS as well. So that comforted me. Another plus was that I was sitting next to a REALLY cute guy (who's at DIS as well, but the architect section), so I had a VERY happy plane ride ;)
When we got off the plane, at 6:30 am there, it was still PITCH BLACK. At 8:10, when the bus came, it was still PITCH BLACK, but the "sun" was coming out (and by sun, I mean it got lighter, but the sun didn't come out until later in the week). We were dropped off at Københaven University (KU) and basically waited there for our families to pick us up (or our roommates or for someone to take u to the dorms. But for me, it was family). My host family has a Mom, Gitte, and her two daughters - Caroline, 17, and Nathalie, 15. They are REALLY nice. And another perk is that I have not one, but TWO dogs!!! They are some sort of Danish breed, and it's the mother and her 3-4 month old PUPPY!!! And the puppy LOVES me and it is fabulous. The only 'bad' part is that they shed, so my clothing is full of dog hair.
So on Sunday, my host family gave me a tour of Copenhagen (Like the train station and how to get from there to DIS. Then I had to get us back to the car) as well as Allerod (pronounced as Al-a-roll, but not too much emphasis on the 'roll' part. Then I took a nap (which was well needed because, with a cute boy next to me instead of a family member, I had no one to sleep on. I was on the aisle, so I was worried that if I leaned too much into the aisle, the drink cart would smash into my head). Then we had a nice dinner, and a chat. And then I unpacked while they were watching their Danish TV show.
Monday came around, and it was my FIRST day having to get into Copenhagen myself (but I am TOTALLY a pro now. lol). So my commute is a bus ride on the 335 or 381 into the town of Allerod, then the E train into Copenhagen, but not the Københaven H stop, but Nørroport, which is a 10 minute walk to DIS. I have found out that January is sales month, so there is a chance that some shopping might be done. I have found this really good sandwich place, which is around the corner from DIS, and well as MANY 7-11's, where I can get European chocolate bars and this really good yogurt, which you can put granola (plus fruit or plus chocolate pieces) into. VERY good! When I came back to home, we had a good dinner (I think it was Swedish meatballs in a curry sauce, but I could be wrong. Then we watched The Wedding Planner, while drinking tea and eating the button cookies I brought from Vermont. Then we went to bed (at around 10) because we get POOPED by then.
Tuesday and Wednesday we have a class called 'Survival Danish,' which is a class, basically, for people who aren't going to be taking Danish as a class (like I am forced to), and need to know the basics. The odd thing is, when I was in HS and college, I would think of answers in English while I was in my French classes, yet here, I think of answers in French instead of Danish. This could be bad. Last night, my Danish group and I went to an area of Denmark (Vestegrad, I believe), and we went to a cafe/pub place where dinner was on the house (or DIS was paying). So I ordered my first ever beer, not realizing that the mug was the size of those super-size cups we got in Disney World. So I barely drank any of it but it mixed badly with my dinner, so I felt REALY nauseous the whole way back home. (But don't worry - there are a few pictures of just how big this mug was, as well as a 'great' picture of me drinking it.) And now here I am. Also, Monday and Tuesday were bright and sunny (going against what my host sister, Caroline said on Sunday when she told me "Cloudy, cloudy, cloudy, rainy, cloudy, SUNNY, cloudy, cloudy, cloudy). But yesterday it rained a LOT, so my nice new coat is hopefully not wet anymore, and neither is my back pack . but who knows.
My plans for this weekend are:
- Friday: Welcome Party at a bar (I think) near DIS. Then I think I'm going to stay the night at a friend's home stay, because it is only 20 minutes away instead of [at least] an hour.
- Saturday: Ice skating in the middle of Copenhagen, then going on a tour, showing us all these "undiscovered" places.
- Sunday: going with my family into Copenhagen to see Enchanted with their cousin.
Plus doing my homework, of COURSE! ;)
More Next Week . hopefully. J
