    A month at a Monastary

    I am currently applying for a summer study session that will take place for a month in a Buddhist Monastary in Zhejiang Province, China. I will live the life of a monk for a month, adhering to a strict diet, limited use of technology of any kind, and hours of meditation.

      China: The program will take place at Ayuwang (King Asoka) Temple in Ninbo, Zhejiang Province in southern China. The Ayuwang (King Asoka) Temple is located in Ninbo, Zhejiang Province in China and is one of three most famous temples in Ninbo, along with Tientong Temple and Xuedou Temple. Ayuwang Temple is three-side surrounded by Mt. Taibai with a pleasant and beautiful environment. Founded in 282 BCE by monk Huida, during the Western Jin dynasty, Zhejiang province’s King Asoka Temple is said to house one of 84,000 pagodas commissioned by its namesake ruler to display the relics of Sakyamuni Buddha. It is one of nineteen mainland Chinese temples to share this foundation story. King Asoka Temple’s sarira/relic is said to be a fragment of the Buddha’s skull. Preserved in a pagoda typically closed to the general public, it is presided over by a resident monk at all times. The relic, which resembles a pearl of pewter color and rice-grain size, is suspended in a glass container in a gossamer netti
