What was the saddest moment you have ever seen in your travels?

Going to concentration camps throughout Germany and the Czech Republic. One in Czech in particular had a bunch of drawings done by the kids who were forced into the concentration camps, which was really sad. And then it also had a room full of the names of those who had died while staying there.

Highlights

  • One thing that Mimi spotted was the flag change above the Palace. On our first day, Sunday, Susanna had told us that the Union Jack was posted when the queen was away, as it had been on that day. However, by Wednesday, the Union Jack was gone and the Windsor flag was being flown. It was just strange to think that the queen was actually in this iconic palace while tourists were walking around and taking pictures of it.

So to start the day, Mimi and I made our way down to the post office to mail stuff home. It was aggravating and expensive (£110 for me!) but I’m so glad it’s done.

Then, right before 3 we made our way via underground to Victoria Station to meet some friends from Ormskirk, Dom and Marcus. It was really great seeing them again! We weren’t the only people to have an Edge Hill Uni reunion; I know of at least two other lads who came specifically to see some of the Americans. Anyway, Victoria Station is probably the most confusing thing ever. There was the tube station, the train station, and the coach station. Of course, it took us 30 or so minutes to find each other due to lack of communication.

After we all finally caught up, the four of us then set out for Buckingham Palace (Marcus is from Blackpool and had never been to London, so for him it was very exciting! You could definitely tell he had never been; never had I seen someone have so much trouble buying a tube ticket.) We took pictures of the Palace and the guards and just generally walked around. 

From there, Mimi and I decided to bring the lads to South Kensington where the museums are. We went into the Natural History Museum because both of us were very interested in the things they had there. The first thing you see when you walk into the Natural History Museum is a great big dinosaur. (It was amazing! I love dinosaurs!) Naturally, this led us to the finding the rest of the dino exhibit, which was actually quite large. I may not know much about dinosaurs, but I would definitely qualify myself as a dino enthusiast. By the time we were done perusing that exhibit, a man came on the intercom explaining that the museum would close in half an hour. We rushed to—and through—the ‘creepy crawly’ exhibit (I really love arachnids, I think they’re fascinating) before it had fully closed.

Marcus then suggested we go look at Covent Gardens so we hopped back on the tube. I’m not entirely sure why I didn’t know that it wasn’t a proper garden, but I can honestly say I was more than surprised to find a giant shopping center and market after leaving the tube. We decided to take the lads to see Trafalgar Square after that and made our way by foot so as to better view London. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to climb on the lions again as there was a giant screen and stage set up. (We asked a security guard and apparently, that next night was to be a ballet and the day after they’d be showing the FIFA World Cup there.)

Afterwards, we just went and hung out in the hotel with the rest of the Americans.
