So first thing today, we got to our ferry from Stranraer to Belfast. After we got off, we met Tom. Apparently he will be both the bus driver and the tour guide. He seems like a nice enough guy, but his accent isn’t quite the Irish I’ve heard. Obviously I can recognize that there is more than one Irish accent, but his just isn’t one I’d consider to be one of those accents…

Anyway, we met him and he drove us around Belfast a bit and gave us a short tour. I know that Belfast has had problems because Ireland has been divided between British rule and Irish, but whenever Tom would tell us about any of these problems, he would start by saying ‘I don’t want to alarm you, but…’ And I’m sorry, but if you have to start with a warning, it just makes it worse and frankly, more scary because of that!

He showed us all of the graffiti and where the city was walled. Of all the things I’ve heard about the problems in Northern Ireland, I’ve never once heard tell of a wall. It definitely reminded me of when I went to Berlin and what we’ve always learned in school about the Berlin Wall that divided East and West Germany.
