Beer, Food, and Surfing
This weekend was an amazing weekend. There was a group of 8 of us who booked a trip to Mojo’s Surf Camp for a weekend. We left Friday night at 8:30 where their bus picked us up in Hexham. When the bus pulled in, we went to get on and as we got to the bus, there was a whole line of guys peeing outside. From then on, I knew we were in for a wild ride. We got on the bus, which was packed full of guys and just a couple of other girls besides our 7. It was a soccer team from the Central Coast and a couple of other internationals. We started drinking on the way there and didn’t get to Crescent Head until about 12:30 a.m.
They already had a fire started for us and it was about 3a.m. when we finally got to our rooms and got to bed. We were woke up at 7a.m. for breakfast, were given instructions, assigned wet suits, and headed to the beach. The breach that we went to Saturday morning was quite a hike from camp. Once we got there, we picked up our surf boards which were these 9 foot long, super thick, foam boards. We gathered in a circle and began our lessons. They taught us the fundaments and after about a half hour, we headed for the water. Unfortunately, surfing was heaps harder than I had ever expected.
We only surfed for about an hour and then we headed back to camp for lunch. We had sandwiched and pasta salad and had another hour to just chill out. At about 2:30p.m. we headed for another beach a lot closer. The surf there was incredible and I still had not quite mastered standing up yet. It was better but it wasn’t looking like I was going to be a professional surfer anytime soon. Saturday night, we had a big dinner, some games, and another fire. It was crazy.
Sunday morning was another early morning but the surf was even better than Saturday. The waves were huge and I had finally mastered standing up. I was finally surfing and learning to turn and ride the wave. It was phenomenal. After a couple of hours we headed back for lunch and to get all packed up. We got on the bus at about 2p.m. and headed for home and didn’t get back to Newcastle until about 5:30. All in all, it was the best $250 I have spent the entire time I have been here. I can official go home and say that I can surf. Although, I don’t think I will get the chance to use my skills very often in Wisconsin. Not to many big waves on the Mississippi.
