What was the dumbest thing you ever did while traveling?

Missed a flight back from Mexico to the States.

Costa Rica 2008

Off to Atenas, Costa Rica. I'm ready to help at the Community Center, help the local Ambulances out , take some Spanish classes, and of course experience everything else under the Costa Rican sun! That's the plan.

...So much to say! and show!

Alright, these next two paragraphs dont belong up top, but I can´t change it...so, I guess just insert them as they seem appropriate.

On Monday after Jaco, I decided to take Justin to Desmontes where I had gone a couple weekends before. This river, in the middle or nowhere, has water-holes carved by massive rocks to spend the day just hangin out and dinkin around. So Susan, Leslie, Justin, and I did that for a couple hours and had an awesome time. We did some things that may or may not be considered very “bright”, but nonetheless fun!! For example, we were the only ones out there, and so when the taxi guy dropped us off, we asked him to return at a certain hour. Well, he did…but we lost track of the time and were 25 minutes late. Miraculously, he was still there, but it would´ve been interesting to see how we were gonna get home otherwise. And lastly, Justin and I jumped off a 30 ft rock into the water. I jumped first…fun, great, no problem. Now Justin is built more like a brick house, or ANCHOR if you will. He jumped in and apparently went a little too far underwater…basically he hit the bottom. I think that freaked him out a little bit. But he was cool about it, saying that it just served as something to push back off of.

Just this past Wednesday, our Spanish teacher took us to the local celebrity in town. He is a man that has been processing sugar since he was 12 (I would guess he´s 65-70 or so now). So we got to see how Costa Ricans processed sugar (dulce in Spanish) during a huge part of their history. It starts with the sugarcane which they stick into an apparatus (which looks similar to the inside of a manual clock, 3 different wheels rubbing together). They have oxen attached to this thing, walking in circles, which then turns this apparatus, consequently passing the sugarcane through it. The sugar water in the sugarcane falls down and is collected. It is then put into a huge pot that evaporates most of the water in order to condense the sugar. They then cool it and poor it into separate blocks, ready for consumption. Keep in mind though this is not sugar that we would think of in the states. This is a little different and is lumped together instead of a sand-like consistency. Anyway, it was really cool to see all the steps it takes to make something I hold so dear to my heart!
