So today i slept in past 9:00. The boys were doing chores until then, so i couldnt play with them anyways. After waking up and getting ready, i went on the playfield with them. Time goes so slowly when there is no school for them and I am the only one there with them. I am not saying that i don't like being here with them, it is just really easy to get bored. The boys were showing me how to make bracelets, so they gave me a few with my name on them. Also, so many of them miss the Wright State students and so many of them wanted me to tell certain people hi, but i told them that since i have so many people to remember, if they wanted to say hi, they should write a letter to give them. At about 11:00 the staff called them all to clean up Bosco for Christmas. All of them spent a few hours cleaning and tidying up. I helped a little bit as well. then, in the afternoon, we went back out on the playfield. More slow-passing time went along, but it was worth it just to talk to the boys. I got to help walk the pigs to the butcher shop for pig kill tomorrow. I was supposed to help Sr. Mimi to set up the Christmas tree in the rec room, but she never called for me, so she said we will do it tomorrow as soon as i get up. Before dinner, i helped the boys who got sponsor letters to write letters back to them. During that, the police brought a new boy in. I think his name is Oshane. Supposedly he was caught stealing money from a pastor, but i dont know where from. I will probably hear more on that later. Something else i experienced today for the first time was the boys getting beat for getting in trouble. A couple of times through the day, i would hear screaming from the staffroom. Then i would see a boy or maybe 2 leave the room holding their bottom and go sit on the rock. In Jamaica, this kind of punishment is legal. It is rough on the boys, but i guess it is what is needed to get a point across to them. Some things here one just has to accept. Also, it is weird that I picked up Patois again so quickly. After spending a month here last year, i started speaking it, but the day i left, i forgot it all and havent spoken it since then until today. The boys kept getting thrown off when i would talk to them in Patois because i am a white boy. They will have to get over it. Suprisingly enough, the 2 people i can carry on the best conversations with are Doogie and Marsham. Doogie has a severe mental handicap and can hardly talk and Marsham is totally mute, but i can understand him very well. It's amazing what some extra time in Jamaica can do. Well, that is all i can think of about today, if i think of more, i will add it to tomorrow's (or whenever the next time is) post.
