Today was awesome. It literally was the best day ever at Bosco, but maybe a close tie with last Christmas at Bosco. I woke up and felt like crap however. I spent about an hour on the playfield with the boys. then I went to the Convent for Breakfast that Sr. Susan cooked. Sr. Mimi told me that I was going to go to Grand Market with the older boys later that morning while she drove the little boys into town to have their own Grand Market. Well, because the Child Care staff are Jamaicans, they took their good little time to finally get my group of boys ready to go. I waited on the playfield for almost 3 hours longer than the time Sr. Mimi said we were going to leave. The other boys were getting bored waiting as well because they all wanted to go as well. Well, the time finally came, so about 25 boys' names were called and they all got dressed to go into Mandeville. Once Sr. Susan gave them money, we all walked from Bosco to Mandeville which took about 45 minutes. I walked with a group of 4 boys, which was fun. I wasn't really looking to buy anything because i didnt want the boys to start begging me for money once they saw i had some. They were already begging me enough for radios and watches and things. What made my day (and i am willing to bet, my trip) however was one boy, Junior Walcott. Once the other three boys went on their way, Junior kept asking me what i wanted to do. I told him that i would do what he wanted because he didnt get to come into town very often. So he walked me to the park because he wanted me to take his picture. I did just that, and then i asked him where else he wanted to go. He said to the video game store. This particular Video game store was also like an arcade. If i paid J$50 a person, i could get 17 minutes of play time on a playstation 2. He and i went for 2 rounds of that and played video games together. Time was running short, so he said he was hungry. I asked him where to get food, and he smelled Jerk Chicken and basically followed the scent to find us some Chicken. I had the guy who sold us the chicken to take our picture together. We then went to find a place to sit and eat our food. All throughout this, he kept telling me how much fun he was having. He said that he was planning to come to Grand Market to buy a little radio to listen to. Then he said he was just going to walk around Mandeville all by himself the whole time. He said because he found me, that it just made his day and he would rather spend money to have fun than to spend money on things to bring back to Bosco. While we were sitting and eating, he started to open up to me about his whole life story and how he got to Bosco and different things about his mother and father and family. I have been playing with this kid on the playfield all week, but he wasnt much different than the rest of the boys, but today was the icing on the cake. I felt like a big brother to him. Not once did he beg me for money, nor did he expect me to give him anything. Out of the kindness of my heart, i made sure he had a good time. He said he loved today too. He told Sr. Mimi about it too. It seems that every year that i come, i have one boy who sticks out to me, and hands down, Junior has that place this year. I will never forget that. We eventually found a taxi to ride back to Bosco in, then was time for Christmas. Santa made me wear a little elf suit, which i wasnt too fond of, but i did it anyway. Now last year, Christmas was the highlight of my trip. It was awesome today too, but i think it is one of those things that once you experience it for the first time, it isnt the same after that. We passed out the presents to the boys, who had to remain silent the whole time until everyone got theirs. Once everyone got theirs, Sr. said to open them, and then the mass chaos started. The boys dug into their things and just started playing and playing. That lasted for about 30 minutes or so, and then they had to go to bed. I went to the convent and had Christmas Eve dinner with the Nuns and Santa. That is basically my day...i am just waiting to go to midnight mass, which seems so far away. Sorry that i didnt talk more about Christmas with the boys, but Grand Market and Junior seemed to far surpass that experience, so i felt like i would share that because that is truely an experience i will never forget.
