So about three weeks ago I moved host families and an exchange student never knows what to expect with the next family because his first family could be completely crazy while the second one is loving and kind. In some cases it could be even worse than actually arriving in brazil and moving in with the first family because you could be expecting one particular habit that always happened with the first family but be very offensive with the next family. In my case though, I think I ended up with the perfect host family. I really feel apart of the family, I call my host parent pai and mae and my host brother is my good friend. A student can always tell if the family is going to be good or not by the way the family recieves him/her the first night. Both of my families tried to make me feel welcome. At my first host family they cooked a special meal for me. With this family now, they showed me around the condinimium and our aparment. They're older son right now is in Bielefeld Germany doing foriegn exchange also. Sometimes hosting an exchange while your kid is in a different country is a great thing but other times it feels like you're just a reminder that they're kid is in a diffent country for another year and that you can't replace them. It's true we can't replace them and it is rarely this case I'm just pointing it out. Its awesome that they're even hosting us. Anyways, my first night I was showed around the neighborhood and watched a movie with my brother and his friends. Alpha Dog was the movie with Justin Timberlake, I often wonder if this is what people not from the US think about suburban america. We didn't eat dinner together because dinner is not a culturally important meal in brazil. It is a very important family tradition that everybody eats lunch together and in this family it consists of about five plates. So, I was able to watch the movie and go to bed when everybody else did. The next day, a sunday, we all went to the family chacara(small farm) and hung out together with all my cousins, aunts and uncles, parents, brother, and grandparents. That afternoon the uncles and my brother watched the Corinthanians soccer team lose. Actually we went to the chacara today, and today was my first day of being Corinthiano and I had to switch to being Sao Paulino because Corinthanians has lost so many games that they had to move to the second division. Both Sao Paulo and Corinthians are brasilian soccer teams from the city of Sao Paulo. So back to the first sunday at the chacara, I had a great time getting sunburned, playing pool and volleyball in the pool with my cousins, and eating a lot of bbq food. That weekend I was able to find out all of the details about my family because of my sweet host mother who looked at all my photos of home and told me all about my family now. My host-father(Paulo) is a cardiologist/director of a hospital/owner of a medical counseling company. And my host-mother(Rosangela) is his secretary at his counseling company. My fourteen year old brother is Rafael(Haf-i-el) and is a big time swimmer with medals all over his room, I am sleeping in his room right now. And I have a host brother in Germany on exchange(Felipe) who is 17 and is also a big time swimmer. The two brothers are very close to each other and I hope that I can be a good brother to them too. Later that week the whole family had a tacky party where I learned that even the slightest things can make you homesick. Its pretty silly actually, they were playing 70s/80s music that my dad and I back home used to listen to and I got pretty homesick for all my family back home. Rosangela was right there for me though and I learned that they really liked me and that I did have a real family in brazil that I can love. She then went on to say that she and Paulo wanted me to stay with them till the end of the end of my exchange in June. For me this was a huge honor because usually the exchange asks the family to stay not the other way around, especially after only one week. So we are going to ask rotary together in a bit to see if I can stay. Overall I don't love my host family, I love my family here and I can't believe that I am living with them during the time of my life here in brazil.
