Rio do Janeiro
Rio do Janeiro is one of the few cities in the world that can be for the richest and poorest people in the world. The most dangerous and the safest city in the world can thank its unique aspects to the fact that it once was Brazil’s capital and people from all over brazil flocked there. Because of this the poor sections of the city were created which are called favelas. Favelas are huge sections of the city that are made up of shacks. Favelas also happen to be the most dangerous place in the world thanks to the drug dealing and gang wars. Films such as Elite Squad (Tropa da Elite) and City of God (cidade de deus) demonstrate the poorness and hazards of living in or around favelas. I stayed in Rio do Janeiro on Copacabana beach for about three days and it really was a revealing experience to literally see on one side of the road a rich hotel or neighborhood and on the other favelas. I went to amazing sites such as Christ the Redeemer and Sugar Loaf that over look Rio do Janeiro but always behind it are the favelas where live people that suffer so much I cannot even imagine. Rio do Janeiro overall was an experience that I will never forget and we should all hold in our minds as we live in safe, drug-free cities.
