today was the final day of the stage and i realised again that it was really geared towards assistants from the uk and not to those from america and jamaica etc. i guess traditionally they had a poor showing from the latter so they may be justified in doing this- either that or they were very lazy and did not plan appropriately for the trainees. most of the 'dittos' (as the american girl nicole called them)- photocopies - presented to us, i couldn't relate to. so i started to wonder if i had anything to offer as a jamaican.
anyway, my confidence was renewed when i met the english teachers from the school where i would be teaching. they assured me that the very fact that i am from jamaica was a big plus in and of itself and that i probably wouldn't have much work in the beginning because i'd be busy fielding questions about bob marley!
the morning was definitely a wearisome one. i woke up late, missed breakfast and found myself searching all over western france for the group! it turned out that they were in the same place. if i had followed my mind i would have gone there directly instead of following some memory (or dream for that matter) that i had about the venue being changed. i wouldn't have used up so much energy. in any case, there was one good side to it all - i succeeded in warming up my icy bones!
as it turned out too, the girls who had set the date with me last night hadn't been at the appointed place at the appointed time and they were scared to approach me. they had gotten lost and it took them some time to get back. i told them i hadn't been there either, as i had been sleeping, and it looked like that really surprised them.
p.s. i wrote my first two letters home tonight - the first to my boyfriend (quite a long one) and the other to mama and the family.
more peace. more love.
