 Next to Nowhere

Driving across North America has many of the charms of backpacking through Europe. You find a place you like and you stay as long as you want. You meet interesting people along the way who tell you about interesting and crazy places you can’t find in the tourist brochures. Hyder, Alaska was one of those places. We met a woman in Seward who told us, ‘If you are going south through BC, take the time and make a side trip to Stewart, BC and Hyder, Alaska.

Like the drive from Anchorage to Seward, the detour to Hyder was one of the most scenic roads I have ever been on. The road is surrounded by massive sheer cliffs, with dramatic waterfalls and glaciers feeding aqua blue lakes. Bald eagles and bears abound.

Hyder itself is a small town at the end of the road. We camped at a place called Camp-Run-A-Muck. Once you leave Canada and enter Hyder, the roads are unpaved and the houses are all preparing for a big winter. Only a handful of people live here year round. If you follow the road through town you will end up at a ranger spot where observation decks have been built around the salmon creek. We had an incredible day watching a grizzly bear catching and eating salmon. The salmon are massive and bright red, they have come from the ocean up the small creeks to spawn and die. The grizzlies catch these huge fish take a bite (usually looking for the eggs) and then discard the fish for the seagulls and scavengers.

In the center of town is a restaurant called the Bus. Husband catches the fish and wife cooks it up inside the bus. The seafood was great!
