My Community Service

When I think of community service, I think of something that someone does for the community that not only helps the community but makes the person doing the service feel good. An example of my community service would be in the summer when I coach kids in Jacksonville Universities Upward Bound Softball, Track, and Spades. Upward Bound (UB) is a program for aspiring high school students that want to get ahead and prepare for college. At the end of the summer UB has an Olympic Ceremony were kids from UBs all over Florida meet and do a variety of events, everything from spelling bee’s to billiards to swimming and basketball. This is my favorite part of community service, because not only does the staff tutor the student during the program we get to watch them develop and make friends throughout the 6 week program. These kids aren’t always from the best areas and sometimes aren’t necessarily the most college ready individuals, so it makes me feel good to show them that if I am making it so can they. The Olympic Ceremony is something that is frequently talked about, but teacher and the rest of the staff have the constantly remind them that if they don’t have above a 2.0 in week 5 when grades come out then they cannot participate in the Olympics or the Mr. & Ms. Upward Bound pageant. It is a good feeling when kids that graduate from the program come back and tell how much the staff helped them succeed not only in the classroom, but in life.

Day two, anxious to taste some McDonald’s, Shane and I head out early to go get some before breakfast starts at the hotel. We get to McDonalds at around 8:15 and notice that it’s closed and we realize that so is everything else. On the walk back all of the stores start opening and we stop at a little shop on the corner and notice how much cheaper things are here than back in the U.S.. After stocking up on some snacks we head back in time to leave for our tour of Ecuador. Our Tour of Ecuador was interesting we saw a lot of statues and a huge church and Cameelo told us a lot about Ecuador’s history. We also took a tour of their river side boardwalk, and we learned a lot about the early Ecuadorian explores and saw some of their tributes to them. We learned about the different ways that Ecuador does things as far as their public school system and their religious beliefs. We also walked to the entrance of the bottom of this hill with an entire community built on top of it; from here we could see an even bigger church with a huge Jesus replica on top of it. We walk back to the hotel and on the way back we see several murals painted on the sides of the buildings. We also see a huge park in front of a church we also notice several stands that sell different kinds of beads and tourist merchandise. We get back to the hotel and leave to go to an Ecuadorian Zoo/Historical Site. The zoo was similar to an American Zoo but it had a tour and we saw several different animals and had a very good time (even though it was about 100 degree). We walked thru several historical houses and learned about then and their importance to Ecuador and why they were rebuilt in a different location.
