My Community Service

When I think of community service, I think of something that someone does for the community that not only helps the community but makes the person doing the service feel good. An example of my community service would be in the summer when I coach kids in Jacksonville Universities Upward Bound Softball, Track, and Spades. Upward Bound (UB) is a program for aspiring high school students that want to get ahead and prepare for college. At the end of the summer UB has an Olympic Ceremony were kids from UBs all over Florida meet and do a variety of events, everything from spelling bee’s to billiards to swimming and basketball. This is my favorite part of community service, because not only does the staff tutor the student during the program we get to watch them develop and make friends throughout the 6 week program. These kids aren’t always from the best areas and sometimes aren’t necessarily the most college ready individuals, so it makes me feel good to show them that if I am making it so can they. The Olympic Ceremony is something that is frequently talked about, but teacher and the rest of the staff have the constantly remind them that if they don’t have above a 2.0 in week 5 when grades come out then they cannot participate in the Olympics or the Mr. & Ms. Upward Bound pageant. It is a good feeling when kids that graduate from the program come back and tell how much the staff helped them succeed not only in the classroom, but in life.

Day seven, we have to wake up at 6am and get some breakfast, because we are heading to Cuenca and it’s about a four hour drive. We load up the bus and head out on the drive up the sites are amazing and you don’t have a choice but to stay awake, because the road is to bumpy to sleep and my ear hurt if I don’t pop them. We get to see the mountains and the little towns that are in the mountains. After about four hours we still aren’t there, but now we are in the clouds so there are plenty of great photo ops.. We finally stop to eat and not much is different from Guayaquil, because people still drive really close to you and really fast (including the bus drivers). We finally arrive in Cuenca and it looks like a city in Europe, with brick roads and everything is smaller from the building sizes, to the roads, and even the blocks are smaller. We walk around the city and there are huge cathedrals and statutes all over the people are about the same as the people in Cuenca except there aren’t as many people in this city. Later that night I sit around and decide to take a bath late night and I turn on both knobs and NOTHING comes out. People had been telling us about the water systems and how they have to ration water, but until then it didn’t really affect me. That night I didn’t really go out to see the night life, because my girlfriend was sick so I stayed with her and noticed that there were no air conditioning vents in the whole hotel which was a very cold night.
